    What is urease inhibitor---NBPT
    Urease inhibitor---NBPT is a substance that inhibits hydrolytic action on urea by the enzyme urease.  YMS urease inhibitors---NBPT 
    prevent or suppress over a certain period of time the transformation of amide-N in urea to ammonium hydroxide and ammonium through
    the hydrolytic action of the enzyme urease. By slowing down the rate at which urea is hydrolyzed in the soil, volatilization losses of ammonia 
    to the air (as well as further leaching losses of nitrate) is either reduced or avoided. Thus, the efficiency of urea and of N fertilizers containing 
    urea (e.g. urea ammonium nitrate solution), is increased and any adverse environmental impact from their use is decreased

    Choosing to use N inhibitors or not in Mid-South corn
    The drying conditions in recent days have resulted in a percentage of corn finally being planted. While most producers are focused on planting, these intense planting conditions will result in a short window for N fertilization. With this narrowed window between planting and N fertilization, it is time to start thinking about N management. In recent years, conditions at or near fertilization have resulted in high potential loss of applied N. These losses not only are detrimental to the surrounding environments but also to the production system, resulting in insufficient available N supply to the crop. The use of N inhibitors has been an increasingly common production practice in an attempt to minimize in-season losses. While the use of N inhibitors is a valuable tool for potentially decreasing N loss, proper management and proper selection are critical to decrease losses successfully.

    When urea or urea-ammonium nitrate (UAN) solutions are applied to the soil surface, gaseous ammonia (NH3) released by hydrolysis may be partially lost to the air.

    Urease inhibitors may reduce these volatilization losses of N. They act by blocking the active site of the urease enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis reaction of urea
